Navigate to Kuali Build Conflict of Commitment Form: MSU Kuali Build is the Conflict of Commitment disclosing software. This is where individuals will enter their outside activities for review and approval by their department's chair/dean.

Review the list of activities that require reporting & approval: This allows the Covered Individuals to review the list of scholarly and outside activities that require reporting or approval and to utilize this tool as a guide while completing the Conflict of Commitment Form in Kuali Build.

Input Additional Activities: This feature allows you to enter additional activities. You may add your outside activity by completing the questions with the Conflict of Commitment Form.

Outside Activities: These are certain personal, professional, commercial, or financial endeavors you undertake with an entity or organization external to Michigan State University in which you utilize the same professional expertise, knowledge, and service you provide to the university. For example, consulting, outside employment, outside appointments, advisory roles, or a leadership role in a professional society.

Scholarly Activities: Activities which extend an employee’s Institutional Responsibilities of teaching, research, and service to other institutions, organizations, and professional societies. These are activities that are expected of employees as part of their professional service and do not require prior approval, however these activities may need to be reported in MSU grant applications, progress reports, or the MSU COI disclosure. Examples include peer review of articles and grant proposals, presentations at professional meetings, leadership positions in professional societies, service on advisory committees for U.S. government funding agencies, non-profit foundations or educational organizations, musical or creative performances.

  • If a non-domestic activity is disclosed, for research security purposes, a restricted party screening will be completed and education may be provided to individual.​

Department and College/Unit Review: Your department or college chair will receive your outside activity and conduct a conflict of commitment review to ensure you are within the allotted time for each activity.

  • Department chairs, supervisors, and deans (“University Administrators”) review for workload, time commitments, and Conflict of Commitment. University Administrators may consult CDM/Provost Office as needed. Outside Activity may require further review if the activity is a potential Conflict of Interest (COI).​

Activity Approved: The outside activity has been received and reviewed by all appropriate parties with no further concerns. You may proceed to engage in this activity and must adhere to any guidance you have received regarding the approval of the activity.

  • If an Outside Activity is not approved, the University administrator shall provide the Covered Individual or Investigator with written reasons for the denial. ​
